Gentle Reader,

I first used the image of Botticelli’s Venus and Mars on my “personal web page” back in the early-90’s, when the web was young, and so was I.  Venus represents my academic discipline, Greek and Roman Literature and Philosophy, and Mars is me.  Lying in post-coital slumber, Mars has his weapons stolen by Venus’s little imps.  The image is even more apt now.  I still have a deep affection for my discipline, but I do drop off to sleep after we’ve spent some time together.  This blog is an opportunity for me to write quasi-publically about ideas and experiences.  I will feel free to reference the books and poems I’ve spent my life studying, but I won’t be providing footnotes.  I will also feel free to reference the business of teaching, for that is another aspect of my beloved Venus which continues to engage me.

Regards,

Botticelli’s Mars
